How 1,4-Butanediol is made:

Another method is the Davy process, which involves Butane is first oxidized to maleic anhydride, and then it is catalytically hydrogenated to produce BDO.  Large-scale production facilities frequently employ this technique since it is economical and efficient.

Using genetically engineered microorganisms, renewable feedstocks like sugar or corn can be fermented to produce BDO in an environmentally friendly manner.
